Born in Indiana, USA, writer Katharine Eliska Kimbriel also spent time in Michigan, Ohio, and California before settling in Texas. She has a B.F.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University, and various other talents tucked in her quiver.
Her obligatory itinerant occupations have included blogger,
social media researcher, correspondence school instructor, clinical LMT, web
designer and maintainer, technical writer, grant writer, sales clerk, and gold
caster. Once upon a time she was nominated for the John W. Campbell
Award for Best New SF/Fantasy Writer. Katharine’s work has long
straddled the line: “too literary to be commercial, too commercial to be literary.”
In other words, she is ready to try success.
Published novels include the historical dark fantasies Night Calls and Kindred Rites , originally from HarperCollins/HarperPrism. They feature Alfreda Golden-tongue, the protagonist of short works "Night Calls," "Triad" and "Ducks." On the science fiction side of the business, you will find Fire Sanctuary, Fires of Nuala, and Hidden Fires, stand-alone science fiction tales which take place on the same planet. The SF was originally published by Warner Books. All five novels are now available as e-books from Book View Cafe, Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Kobo.com and iTunes.com.
Katharine is a founding member of Book View Cafe.
To quote fellow member Sherwood Smith, "BVC is a cooperative publishing effort among authors across all genres, from science fiction to romance to historical to mainstream. We function as editors, copyeditors, formatters, cover artists, and site maintainers. We offer both reprints (currently in e-form, but we're looking at print options) and new books. 95% of the proceeds go to the authors. That means that the author gets more of the cover price at BVC than at any other online bookseller (Amazon, B&N, iTunes)."
Here is our latest offering, our blog is here, and this is my bookshelf.
Her non-fiction credits include articles on writing the perfect synopsis, and on finding an agent. Short fiction has appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, AMAZING!, and such anthologies as ARABESQUES 2, THE BLOOD OF TEN CHIEFS, WEREWOLVES, DRAGON LORDS & WARRIOR WOMEN, and THE SHADOW CONSPIRACY II. She has a chapbook out from Yard Dog Press called WINGS OF MORNING -- it contains a metaphysical tale called "If I Take the WIngs of Morning" and an Alfreda short story called "Ducks."
Managed by a Burmese cat and a handful of gargoyles, Katharine's occasional hobbies have included ballroom dancing, brewing beer, antique roses, beading, Xeriscaping, making Ukrainian Easter eggs, and practicing on her Celtic harp Real Soon Now. She has been a macrobiotic/paleolithic practitioner for several years, but confesses to a weakness for high quality gluten free chocolate in infinitesimally small doses. She posts at her live journal (http://alfreda89.livejournal.com/) which runs downhill to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Goodreads and other points east.
